Overcoming Negativity on Social Media

Five Tips to Overcome Negativity on Social Media

With the rise of the Internet and invention of social media as we currently know it (thanks Tom from MySpace and Mark Zuckerberg), it is almost impossible to grow a business or a brand without a prominent online presence in 2018.

This truth can be both harsh and intimidating for many people especially those who are particularly sensitive or private. For all the pros of social media (connections, cost efficiency, and instant feedback to name just a few) there are also cons that you must consider before navigating the murky waters of social media.

Unfortunately, there can be a particularly dark side to the internet from the negativity in the form of hurtful or inappropriate comments/messages, to the trolling and bullying, and even falling into the pressure or comparison trap (I just want a perfectly toned core while being able to eat two pints of ice cream every night, is that too much to ask?).

Although the negativity exists, it’s important to keep in mind that there are healthy ways to maintain a positive perspective.

Below are just a few tips on how to overcome social media negativity such as blocking particular keywords, deciphering constructive criticism from actual trolls and even taking a much needed break from social media when necessary.

PERSPECTIVE

Ever heard the phrase – it is not about you, it is about them? I honestly cannot put enough emphasis on the importance of being able to maintain a positive attitude regarding social media.

Sometimes people are just mean for no reason and it has nothing to do with you or your brand. Be kind, be positive, and keep in mind that it is not possible to please everyone. It is possible for you to control how you let it affect you and influence your brand.

BLOCK KEYWORDS

The cool thing about social media evolving is that we now have the ability to block any keywords that we choose.

Generally, most brands block curse words, sexual, political, and derogatory keywords.

Blocking keywords is helpful because it ensures that no messaging will show up with the blocked keywords! This is a great step to overcoming negativity by just eliminating it all together.

CONSTRUCTIVE VS. TROLL

As with any brand, reputation management (the understanding/analysis of how your brand perceived in the market) is crucial.

Tracking negative comments is a vital piece in developing a positive relationship with your clients or audience. However, when tracking negative messages or comments it is important to distinguish between comments that provide constructive feedback and comments that are just negative for the sake of being negative.

If the latter, block and dismiss the negativity for what it is. If the comment is constructive, assess the situation and make adjustments if applicable.

TAKE A BREAK

I go through phases where I feel disconnected from my friends because I am so consumed by my phone. During these phases, I delete my social media and focus on being present and in the moment.

Taking quality breaks from anything especially social media is imperative to your ability to recharge and maintain a positive perspective. So take a break, delete your Instagram, spend some quality time with your loved ones and be present for every experience. I promise, your brand and your efficiency will thank you.

POSITIVITY

Ultimately, it is all about your mindset. Stay positive; stay on brand, and always do you best to maintain a positive attitude.
